Yield, 2023. 109” x 51”. Gouache on drafting film. Installed at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Photography by Jenna Garrett.
Yield is a self-portrait triptych on drafting film, a material typically used in architectural drawings. This work was a major departure for me and is more personal than work I typically show. Truthfully, I made this piece as a way of trying to de-institutionalize parts of my own creative practice and to reconnect with modes of mark-making that once brought me joy. I created this painting for the Bay Area Now 9 triennial at the YBCA while dealing with a very personally challenging year. In this composition, I am inhabiting multiple stages of disintegration and regeneration, as I am decomposing into a compost pile that I am also about to begin shoveling.
